Lori sent us an email asking what is the best way to line Bucilla Felt Stocking Kits for more strength and cleanliness, so I decided to line a stocking that I had made a few years ago and create this tutorial along the way. Thank you Lori for your question, and here goes.
- Step 1. Choose a fabric that will work well for lining your stocking. I like to use regular silky polyester lining because it doesn’t add bulk, and the goodies will slide easily in and out of the stocking. As far as the color of the lining goes you can choose to match the stocking color or contrast with it. It’s more of a personal preference. You will need approximately 1/2 yard for an 18″ stocking.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 2. After cutting out the felt stocking back piece from the kit, lay it down on the fabric that is folded over so that you have double thickness(right side on the inside). Draw around felt piece with a pen taking care not to mark on your felt piece. This line will be your sewing line. Note – if your stocking is already finished just lay it down on the lining and use it to draw around. It will be a little bulkier than using the back felt piece alone, but it will still work wonderfully.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 3. Pin the lining fabric together just inside the sewing line.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 4. Cut out the stocking adding a 1/2″ seam allowance (You are cutting both the back and front lining at the same time). I just eyeball it, but if you don’t feel comfortable doing that you can measure and draw a cutting line.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 5. Stitch along the sewing line leaving the top open. Obviously your thread will match your lining. I’m using contrasting thread to attempt to show my stitches.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 6. Clip curves. Do not turn the stocking inside out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 7. Hem the top by turning down the edge to the wrong side of lining just a hair more than 1/2″ and straight stitching in place. Press hem flat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 8. Place your hand inside the lining and slide it into your finished felt stocking. Pin in place just below the top of the stocking.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Step 9. Slip stitch around the top. I recommend using thread that matches the felt instead of the lining because it is very difficult to keep stitches from showing through the felt.
